 1. What is Oral Pathology?

Oral Pathology is the branch of Pathology that deals with study of Oral & Para Oral disorders at cellular level.

 2. Does it deal with diagnosis?

Yes, the branch of Oral Pathology like General Pathology involves the study of a disorder at cellular level or tissue level. Once the cellular alterations or tissue changes are noted microscopically, the pathologist can diagnose a particular disorder after correlating it to the clinical, radiological and biochemical features.

 3. What are the different methods to study a disorder at cellular or tissue level?

  1. The study of tissue at microscopy is referred to as histopathology.
  2. The study of cellular alterations at microscopic levels is referred to as cytology.
  3. Blood & blood related disorders studies can be done by hematology or hematological analysis.

 4. What are different lab procedures involved in the Pathology?

Once the biopsied tissue arrives in the lab, it is fixed in formalin. The tissue is further processed, embedded sectioned and stained for the microscopic examination.

 5. What is the purpose of fixation, processing and embedding of a tissue?

The tissue is fixed (after the biopsy) to preserve its morphology. The processing is done to remove fixative and other processing agents or impurities.

The embedding of tissue is done in a way in order to ensure that the tissue can withstand the strokes of a microtome cutting knife. To view the tissue at microscopic level it has to be sectioned at extremely thin level.

 6. What are the procedures of cell Cytology?

Cell Cytology study in the basic screening procedure to detect especially cancer e.g. cancer of a uterus. The smear is taken instead of a biopsy and stained to study the altered exfoliated cells after staining.

 7. What are recent advances of Oral Pathology?

The recent advances include Immunohisto chemistry, Enzyme Immunofluorescence chemistry, Immuno/luorescence PCR, In situ hybridisation, Gene mapping etc.
