 1. What is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is the part of dental practice that deals with the diagnosis, surgical and adjunct line treatment of diseases and injuries and defects of the oral and maxillofacial region.

 2. What are some of the systemic diseases that may produce bleeding?

  1. Hemophilia and hemophilic disorders.
  2. Platelet suppression or malfunction.
  3. Increased capillary fragility.
  4. Bone marrow suppression.
  5. Aspirin or anticoagulants as taken by cardiac patients.
  6. Hypertension.
  7. Lymphomas and leukemia.
  8. Other systemic diseases (Liver/Renal/Hormonal)

 3. What three things are accomplished by early removal of an infected tooth which can lead to an abscess?

  1. The cause of infection is removed.
  2. Drainage is frequently established.
  3. Pain is alleviated.

 4. What is an impacted tooth?

Impacted tooth is that tooth which fails to erupt in the oral cavity within the eruption period due to lack of space.

 5. What is considered an ideal time for the removal of impacted third molars?

Ideal time for removal of impacted tooth is when realised that the tooth may not erupt to serve as a functional tooth.

 6. Why is it easier to remove impacted teeth in early age?

It is easier to remove impacted teeth in early age because of the following reasons:

  1. The elasticity of bone is more in young age.
  2. Better general health of the patient.
  3. More rapid healing process.
  4. Incomplete formation of roots.
  5. To avoid complications.

 7. What is alveloplasty ?

Alveloplasty is the process to prepare surgically the alveolar ridge to obtain the best possible base for the placement of denture.

 8. In case of trauma if tooth comes out of socket, what will you do?

The tooth should be immediately soaked in milk or saline or best placed inside the socket and bought to the dentist.

 9. In case the patient is unable to close the mouth after yawning what should be done ?

This is a simple case of dislocation of mandible and the patient should be immediately brought to the dental clinic where the condition can be treated by manual reduction and extra-oral bandage. Furthermore physiotherapy is advised and the patient is trained to limit mandibular movements.

 10. Will my eyes be affected after extraction ?

No the eyes will not be affected as the nerve supply of the teeth are different and that of eyes are different.

 11. What will you do when fracture of mandible or maxilla occurs ?

  1. First of all bleeding should be stopped.

  2. Secondly treatment should be given.
  3. Rush to nearest emergency as early as possible to rule out head injury and other emergency regarding airway, hemorrhage, etc.
  4. The patient has to report to maxillofacial surgery for management of fracture.

 12. What care should be taken after extraction of a tooth ?

  1. Cotton pack should be kept in place and pressed for at least 40 minutes.
  2. Spitting should be avoided for 24 hours.
  3. Consumption of hot hard food and use of straw should be avoided.
  4. Warm saline rinses is recommended after 24 hours for 2 to 3 days.

 

 13. What can be done in case of post extraction bleeding ?

  1. Application of pressure pack .
  2. Avoiding spitting and hot food .
  3. Report to the dentist immediately

 14. List the factors that must be considered before the definitive treatment of facial bones is indicated .

  1. Patient airway.
  2. Hemorrhage.
  3. Shock.
  4. Injuries to other parts of the body.
  5. Evaluation and treatment of central nervous system injuries
  6. Contamination of any wound by Clostridium tetani.
