The Dental Council of India & Indian Dental Association along with Pierre Fauchard Academy jointly organized a workshop for finding out the methodology for accreditation of continuing dental education programmes aptly titled “ Continuing Dental Education: Roadmap to Accreditation” at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi on11th September 2007.

The task of organizing was bestowed on the experienced shoulders of Prof. Mahesh Verma, Director-Principal along with eminent dental professionals as co-coordinators at national and local levels. The local organizing committee, comprising of faculty members of MAIDS, were involved in fine tuning of all aspects of the workshop right from inauguration, hospitality, registration, accommodation, and transport to stage decoration which was appreciated by one and all.

The chief guest of the function was Dr. William J Winspear, International President, Pierre Fauchard Academy and the guest of honor was Shri Vivek Rae, Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare, Govt of NCT of Delhi.

Chairpersons President Dental Council of India, Padmabhushan (Brig) Dr. Anil Kohli and Dr. M.C. Mohan opened the morning session. Co-chairpersons Dr. Ashok Dhoble and Maj. Gen. (retd.) P.N. Awasthi, Secretary DCI welcomed more than 150 eminent dental professionals from across the country to participate in this brainstorming workshop. As many as 24 states had sent their state council and IDA-CDE representatives to make the function a great success.

Dr. Raghunath Puttaiah from Baylor College of Dentistry, USA, spoke about the ADA accreditation process and details of the methodology followed in USA. Dr. (Prof) OP Kharbanda from AIIMS deliberated upon methodology for accreditation and practicing license renewal in Australia and UK. Following this, Dr. Anmol Kalha from Davengere proposed the blue print for CDE accreditation and Dr. Usha Mohan from Bangalore proposed methodology for regulation and monitoring CDE. Dr. Rebecca Yeoung from Hong Kong spoke about the role of industry in conduction of CDE and its ethical aspect.

High tea and lunch provided the perfect setting for informal interaction between the invited guests. Dr. Anil Kohli, President DCI, chaired the concluding session and appreciated the efforts put in the various groups, co-ordinators and rapporteurs in preparing the recommendations. The whole house unanimously approved that there was a need to have accreditation points of 30 hours per year for renewal of registration which must be declared by the registered member at the time of registration.

Later in the day, Dr. Kohli invited all the participants, speakers and entire faculty of MAIDS to DCI office for the official inauguration of R A Ahmed Hall, a spanking new Conference Hall at the DCI. Dr. William J Winspear, International President, Pierre Fauchard Academy, officially inaugurated the hall and also announced the induction of Late Dr. R A Ahmed first Indian dentist in the Pierre Fauchard Hall of Fame. It was indeed a proud moment for all those gathered as one of our own found well-deserved international recognition by a body as esteemed as Pierre Fauchard Academy. The PFA also announced the student award for meritorious achievement and this was also won by our 2nd year BDS student, Mr. Rajeev Kain. The function concluded with evening tea that was hosted by the DCI.
